It is important for you to make sure you are using the best possible quality pallets to ensure the safety of your product as well as your employees. Storage Systems Company Reminds Businesses to Conduct Regular Inspections of their Pallet Racking to Ensure a Safe Work Environment

CINCINNATI – Protecting your people, product, and physical plant from danger and disaster is the best investment any company can make.  Storage Systems Company (www.storagesystemsco.com), a Cincinnati- based industrial storage solutions group, is reminding all companies to have a defined pallet rack inspection process and schedule, and to replace damaged pallet racking when needed to ensure the safety of their employees.

Pallet rack safety should be a top priority when evaluating the safety of your warehouse space. Damaged pallet racks should be reported and replaced with new pallet racking immediately. Even minor damage should be inspected by a professional so they can determine if the racking should be repaired or replaced.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OHSA) estimate that 20,000 workers are injured every year because of pallet rack related injuries, 100 of which are fatal. These accidents result in lost work time, worker’s compensation claims, and productivity losses. Scheduled inspections are crucial in reducing the risk of injury as well as making timely repairs.  The Rack Manufacturer's Institute (RMI) suggests monthly inspections. Furthermore, warehouse personnel need to be keenly aware of the potential severity of a warehouse accident due to damaged racks that collapse.
Storage Systems Company provides companies with quality customized storage solutions creating efficient and productive working environments.  As a market leader, Storage Systems takes pride in their safety measures when installing their storage units.  Storage Systems helps to ensure that your pallet racks are safe and up to the proper standard, and can advise you on rack repair or new racking, if necessary.
Storage Systems uses racks that are certified RMI 97 (Rack Manufacturer's Institute), confirming they were made with the most stringent safety procedures. These are the highest quality and safest storage racks on the market with uniform capacity ratings. Built to last a lifetime, these pallet racks provide better space utilization and can easily be customized to fit your needs.
“Rack inspection is a task that sometimes gets overlooked.  But the safety of your warehouse staff is so important and depends on it,” says Bill Judd of Storage Systems Company. “Rack safety and rack repair should be a top priority when inspecting your warehouse storage space.”

Do not overload any rack component, bay, or system

While it may be tempting to load and store as much as you can on a storage rack, your storage rack is designed to support a specific load weight in a specific configuration. Using your rack in any other manner other than originally configured could lead to rack collapse and serious injury. Contact Storage Systems Company for more advice on rack safety.

Note to our Customers

As steel prices have increased steadily since November of last year, the net change has been significant. Unfortunately we expect these prices to keep inching up in the upcoming months, so we must adjust our surcharge rate accordingly. Steel surcharges will be adjusted up or down as the market changes.

Take Pride in your Storage

Background/Overview: The Sam Adams Brewery in Cincinnati brews, bottles, and distributes Sam Adams’ array of award-winning beers. They are generally responsible for distributing to the regions south and west of Ohio. Their complex in Cincinnati consists of a brewing and bottling facility and a warehouse used for shipping.

Problem/Challenge: Sam Adams had an excess of uncategorized materials around their facility with no clear solution or system for organizing those materials. Parts were not stored in any family or machine groups. Without a clear method of organization or designated space for the storage of many items, they had difficulty keeping track of materials, making it generally impossible to have an inventory snapshot at any given time. Furthermore, there was a potential risk of unauthorized usage of equipment or for essential items to go missing simply because they had no designated areas in which to store them or an organizational system.

Storage Systems Solution: After analyzing the layout, storage, and organizational challenges facing the brewery, Storage Systems Company was able to design a storage solution in Sam Adams’ shipping area to properly categorize and store different materials, as well as maximize their use of space.

Storage Systems used wire fencing and “small parts” shelving – 7 feet high x 36 inches wide x 18 inches deep with adjustable shelves on 1.5 inch centers – to create four caged areas in which to store and categorize supplies and other excess inventory around the facility. All the shelves are adjustable to meet the cubic capacity required by the parts to maximize their use of space. The wire fencing protects parts from inadvertent use.

The four caged areas now provide separate areas in which to categorize different supplies— one is used for cleaning supplies, one for sample shipments that includes a computer on which employees can enter a UPS code and easily send product samples, one for human resources and miscellaneous supplies, and finally one for payroll items that need to be under lock and key.

Results: Now that the brewery has clear, designated areas in which to store their varied supplies, overall organization has greatly improved. As a result, employees can quickly and easily find and retrieve the materials they need. The brewery was able to eliminate old or obsolete parts that were no longer applicable. And they can have an accurate picture of inventory at any given time, and identify and prevent potential losses. Most importantly, this storage solution ensures that appropriate personnel have access to these materials when they need them most, increasing productivity.
